OxyPower HTC Pilot Project Rotterdam – subsidised by Kansen voor West II

Wet organic waste is a growing stream and there is a clear need for more circular solutions for treatment. The main drivers behind this project are risk minimization in the off-take and potential valorisation of the resources that are contained in the sludge.

C-Green and REYM believe that HTC treatment combined with wet oxidation can be a solution.

The OxyPower HTC Pilot project has been granted an ERDF contribution of € 75 000

The duration of the project is from April 20, 2023 to December 31, 2023

For the project, the two pilot units for HTC treatment and wet oxidation were brought to the site of REYM Rotterdam. From April through June, six different sludge streams have been treated in the HTC and wet oxidation process. The outgoing product streams, biocoal, HTC filtrate and wet oxidation filtrate, were sent for external lab analysis and to potential off-takers.

The pilot trials on site were successful and generated interest. On June 8, iTanks and EIT InnoEnergy together with REYM hosted an Open House event at the premises of REYM Rotterdam. The event received great attention with many visitors from industries and businesses in the area as well as other stakeholders from the private and public sector. The event confirmed the value in having the possibility to show-case the process live, on site and to demonstrate the transformation of sludge into biocoal.

Following the results of the technical and commercial analysis of the outgoing streams, a business case is now being worked out for a full-scale OxyPower HTCTM plant at the site of REYM Rotterdam, including the technical and commercial feasibility of an installation.
